Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has welcomed the announcement by the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) of the results for the 34 municipalities that participated in the second group of Municipal Council Elections, which ended on 16 and 23 August 2025.
A statement on the website of UNSMIL said it has also welcomed the announcement of the results for the municipality of Shwerif, which had been pending since the first group of Municipal Council Elections held in November 2024.
“UNSMIL congratulates the newly elected municipal councilors and wishes them success in fulfilling their important governance responsibilities. The Mission also commends HNEC for its persistence and resilience in successfully advancing the electoral process in line with its mandate,” the statement said.
The UN mission reiterated its call to all responsible actors to remove any obstacles preventing the continuation of elections in municipalities where the process was suspended.
“It is essential that all Libyan citizens can exercise their political rights and participate in shaping their local governance. Holding elections fosters trust and accountability between citizens and legitimate local authorities,” UNSMIL added.
