Sudanese doctors decry rising cases of killing of medical personnel
Port Sudan, Sudan (PANA) - The Sudan Doctors Network has lamented that an increasing number of medical personnel are being killed in the bloody war in the East African country at a time they are most needed.
The Network, in a press release on its Facebook account on Saturday, said since April 2023, when the war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) broke out, it has documented the deaths of 231 medica personel, more than 500 wounded and over 59 missing.
“The Sudan Doctors Network strongly condemns the systematic and repeated targeting of medical personnel in the ongoing war, which has led to the loss of many key figures in the health sector, amid international and regional disregard for these crimes.”
The Network warned that targeting medical personnel constitutes a war crime and a blatant violation of international humanitarian law, which prohibits attacks on doctors, hospitals, and relief teams.
It said this deliberate targeting endangers not only the lives of medical professionals but also the lives of hundreds of thousands of citizens who depend on their services, particularly amid the collapse of the healthcare system.
The Network reiterated its commitment to its humanitarian and moral duty to treat patients and the wounded despite extremely harsh conditions.
The statement said the network holds the warring parties fully responsible for the targeting of medical personnel and health facilities, and called on the international community and human rights organisations to exert pressure to stop these violations.
“The Sudan Doctors Network mourns its fallen colleagues and renews its pledge to continue working alongside citizens to protect the right to life and the right to medical care until this tragedy comes to an end,” the statement added.
