Kassala, Sudan (PANA) - The Sudan Doctors Network has announced that an outbreak of cholera in Kassala State, eastern Sudan, has so far led to the death of seven people and the infection of more than 350 others.
The Sudanese doctors grouping said it has been “closely monitoring the situation with deep concern”, saying the situation is worsened by a weak healthcare response, limited resources, the rainy season and floods.
In a statement it published on its Facebook account, the network affirmed that this was a “catastrophic situation “that threatens the lives of thousands of citizens amidst the fragile healthcare system and deteriorating medical infrastructure, which calls for urgent intervention at all levels.
The statement said the Sudan Doctors Network has called for urgent provision of medical supplies, including intravenous and oral rehydration solutions, antibiotics, and infection control materials. It also stressed the importance of supporting healthcare workers in Kassala State through field assistance, the provision of protective equipment, and the activation of public health awareness campaigns.
“The Network urges humanitarian, regional, and international organisations to intervene and provide medical assistance to help curb the spread of the disease and save lives."
It warned that the situation required “immediate and effective response".
