Port Sudan, Sudan (PANA) - The Sudan Doctors Network, reporting from Al Fashir, Darfur region, has said dozens of people were killed or injured in a morning shelling on Wednesday by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), hitting the central market area and residential areas adjacent to it.
The charity reported that 24 people were killed and 55 others were injured, including 5 women, as a result of the shelling, which targeted the central market area and the Awlad Al-Reef neighbourhood of Al Fashir, North Darfur State.
In a statement it posted on its Facebook account on Thursday, the Sudanese Doctors Network said it “strongly condemns this massacre committed by the RSF due to the deliberate artillery attack on Al Fashir”.
It added that the sheling adds to a series of war crimes and acts of genocide targeting unarmed civilians in Al Fashir for more than a year, amidst a tight siege and a severe shortage of food, medicine, and essential services.
The Network said it considers targeting of densely populated residential areas a blatant violation of all international and humanitarian laws and reveals the widespread abuses committed by the RSF against citizens who have remained in their homes and on their land.
The Sudan Doctors Network said it holds the international community, the UN Security Council, and the African Union “fully responsible” for their silence and failure to confront these crimes.
It called for immediate action to stop the shelling, lift the siege on Al Fashir, and increase pressure on RSF leadership to halt the ongoing genocide and systematic starvation of unarmed civilians in the city.
