Sudan: Scores die of malnutrition as thousands in need of nutrition in South Kordofan

Port Sudan, Sudan (PANA) - Sudan Doctors Network on Saturday said it had documented the death of 46 civilians in South Kordofan due to malnutrition in July and August this year.

The charity said it also documented 19,000 pregnant and breast-feeding women in the same area, some 700 km south west of Khartoum, in urgent need of nutrition.

The area is currently under siege by the Rapid Support Forces and food had to be airdropped sometimes.

The Sudan Doctors Network has said the people it documented are mostly women and children.

“More than 18,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women are in urgent need of additional nutrition, underscoring that the crisis in the state has reached a critical stage,” a statement by the group published in the Face-book account said Saturday.

The Network cautioned that “starving civilians and using food as a weapon of war constitute crimes against humanity and war crimes under international law”.

The humanitarian situation is catastrophic in the cities of Kadugli and Dilling. Kadugli and Dilling are the two major towns in south Kordofan region, south western Sudan.

The Sudan Doctors Network “strongly condemns the continued siege and deliberate starvation of civilians. It demands the immediate lifting of the blockade and the opening of safe humanitarian corridors to allow the unrestricted delivery of food and medicine,” the statement said.

It urgently appealed to local, regional, and international authorities, the World Health Organisation, and all relevant humanitarian agencies to intervene without delay to save the lives of pregnant and breastfeeding women and children before it is too late.
