Landslide wipes out entire town in Darfur killing hundreds

Port Sudan, Sudan (PANA) - Heavy rains and flooding have caused a landslide in the mountainous region of Jebal Marra, wiping out a whole town, killing hundreds with only a single survivor.

The civil authority affiliated with the Sudan Liberation Movement said on Monday that all residents of a Tarsain village in Jebel Marra, Central Darfur State, had died following the landslide.

The area of Tarsain, which was struck by this natural disaster, is one of Jebel Marra’s most well-known citrus-producing regions.

The statement appealed to the United Nations, as well as regional and international organisations, to assist the civil authority in recovering the bodies of the victims.

The Sudanese government in Port Sudan issued a statement of condolences and said it was ready to provide any assistance. This is one of the areas under the control of an armed opposition group, the Sudan Liberation Army of Mohamed Nour.

Meanwhile the governor of Darfur Region, Mini Arko Minawi, currently on a visit to Germany, has issued a statement calling the natural disaster “a human tragedy".

“What happened in the town of Tarsain in Jebel Marra is a humanitarian tragedy that transcends the borders of the region, as we lost a large number of our people in a devastating natural disaster. We offer our condolences to the victims and their families, and we appeal to international humanitarian organisations to intervene urgently to provide support and assistance.” Mini said on Tuesday.
