IGAD consoles Sudan following devastating landslide in Darfur

Port Sudan, Sudan (PANA) - The East African grouping, Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), has consoled the Sudanese people and local communities over the recent landslide calamity that left hundreds dead and devastated a whole area in North Darfur State.

A press release published by IGAD on Wednesday stated that the Executive Secretary of IGAD, Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, has expressed his deepest condolences to the families and communities affected by the landslide which claimed more than 1,000 lives and destroyed the entire town of Tarsain in the Marra Mountain.

“This tragedy comes at a time when the people of the Republic of Sudan are already facing immense hardship as a result of the ongoing conflict since April 2023, which has caused severe loss of life and livelihoods," it said.

“On behalf of IGAD, Dr. Workneh conveys heartfelt sympathies to the people of the Republic of Sudan, particularly to the bereaved families and affected communities.”

Dr Workneh reaffirmed IGAD’s solidarity with the Sudan in this moment of compounded grief and underscored the urgent need for peace, unity, and resilience, while also stressing the importance of facilitating timely humanitarian assistance to those most in need.
