Ivorian civil society convention calls on political class to live up to responsibility in peacekeeping

Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire (PANA) – The Ivorian civil society convention (CSCI) Tuesday called on the political class to live up to its full responsibility in the keeping of social cohesion and peace.

In a declaration made public on Tuesday, the CSCI noted with much concern over the past few weeks the state of tension of the political and social environment in Côte d'Ivoire.

The group of civil society organisations said this "regrettable atmosphere still caused by the Ivorian political actors caused social discomfort and generalized fear which sows within populations uncertainty and despair".

CSCI said it was paying particular attention to the evolution of that deleterious atmosphere caused by the fight for accession to power.

"If nothing is done, the stakes of power might compromise the democratic game in 2020," it warned.

The CSCI said the "Guillaume Soro affair" was a perfect illustration that continued threatening the daily life of the brave Ivorian populations.

The failed return on 23 December of the former speaker of the Ivorian parliament, Guillaume Soro, triggered the steamroller of justice against him and certain personalities of the movements supporting him.

Soro is the object of international arrest warrant for allegedly breaching the state authority.

“CSCI launches urgent appeal to President Alassane Ouattara and the political class to prioritize the highest interest of the nation.”
