Indian President starts two-day working visit to The Gambia

Banjul, Gambia (PANA)   -   The president of the Republic of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, is expected to arrive Tuesday, 30 July in Banjul, The Gambia, as part of a two-day working visit to the West African nation.

A statement from the Gambian Presidency at State House in Banjul said here Monday that President Kovind’s visit “is the single most high profile visit by Indian Head of State to The Gambia and other West African countries”.

The visit is said to be motivated by what has been called, “excellent commercial and bilateral relations between The Gambia and India”.

“The visit shows the importance attached to his country’s relations with The Gambia. India is the largest democracy in the world and The Gambia is the youngest democracy. This relation could not have been any better,” remarked Indian Ambassador to the Gambia Rajeev Kumar.

He said the two countries were both members of the Commonwealth and shared a long history of bilateral relations dating back to the colonial days.

Meanwhile, trade between The Gambia and India is close to a staggering $190million annually and the West African nation enjoys strong presence of Indian companies.
