South African President Ramaphosa takes aim at 'geopolitical superpowers'

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa will not bow to “geopolitical superpowers at the altar of its sovereignty”.

He was speaking at his party’s elective conference in Limpopo on Sunday. “Those who believe might is right should be aware that their approach and policy are not acceptable to us in the rest of the global South because we believe in equity, multilateralism, and collaboration, rather than suppressing weaker nations,” Ramaphosa said.

He said “the illegal war” being waged by the US and Israel is an act of imperialist aggression that has placed the global economy and international security at great risk. “We have taken a principled stance which is consistent with our independent foreign policy. We have continued to support those nations that are struggling for self-determination, nations such as Palestine, Cuba, and Western Sahara, in the face of the threats that are being made and actions that are being made to undermine their standing.”

Meanwhile, the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Pretoria has expressed its gratitude to South Africans for their support and solidarity following recent military strikes on in the country.

This response follows a letter from the Walter and Albertina Sisulu Foundation for Social Justice addressed to the embassy in which it condemned attacks by Israel and the US that impacted civilian, industrial, and nuclear infrastructure.

The foundation framed these strikes as violations of international law, including the UN Charter, international humanitarian law, and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, highlighting Iran’s continued commitment as a signatory to the treaty.

“The people of South Africa have always shown that they stand on the right side of history. South Africa is the homeland of (Nelson) Mandela, a symbol of the struggle for freedom,” the embassy said in a statement.
