Libyan Parliamentary committee to examine bill on combating domestic violence

Benghazi , Libya (PANA) - As part of the efforts of the eastern-based Libyan House of Representatives to strengthen legal protection for Libyan families, the parliamentary Committee on Women and Children has held a consultative meeting to examine the bill on combating domestic violence.

The meeting was chaired by the chairperson of the Committee on Women and Children, Intisar Chnaib, and brought together the member of the committee, Suleiman Sweiker, as well as the members of the committee responsible for drafting the bill, said a statement from Parliament on Wednesday.

The meeting focused on several key topics, including gaps and challenges posed by the current legislation, practical issues impeding its implementation, proposed mechanisms and solutions to ensure the effectiveness of the new draft law, as well as prevention proposals aimed at reducing domestic violence before it occurs.

The meeting highlights the commitment of the parliamentary committee to take into account all expert opinions and proposals in order to develop a comprehensive law contributing to the strengthening of social stability, in accordance with the principles of Islamic sharia and the customs and traditions of Libyan society, and guaranteeing the highest level of protection and security to Libyan families.

The Chair of the Women and Children’s Affairs Committee said that this bill is the second on which the committee has been working, after the review of the law on the protection of women against violence, which deals with issues specific to women.

She added that each law is independent and addressed to a specific group, specifying that the law against domestic violence addresses in detail family issues, including those of women, men, children, people with disabilities and the elderly.
