Sudan calls for end to African Union suspension
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohieddin Salem on Thursday called on the African Union (AU) to end the suspension of his country’s membership, warning that external interference and regional agendas are fueling the ongoing conflict.
Salem made the remarks during an informal consultation session of the African Union Peace and Security Council at its headquarters in Addis Ababa, Sudanese news outlet, Sudan Tribune, reported.
The session was chaired by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, whose country holds the council’s presidency for February.
The news outlet noted that the address marks the first time a Sudanese foreign minister has participated in an official council meeting since the AU suspended Sudan’s membership in October 2021 following a military coup.
Salem urged the council to take a firm stance against violations by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), citing the targeting of civilians and infrastructure. He highlighted recent attacks in Kordofan against World Food Programme (WFP) relief trucks as a dangerous escalation.
The minister said the RSF is receiving advanced weaponry, drones, and mercenaries from foreign parties, which he described as a threat to regional peace and security.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty emphasised that Sudan’s stability is a regional necessity to prevent the spread of chaos and terrorism. He reaffirmed Cairo’s support for Sudan’s unity and national institutions, rejecting any attempts to undermine its sovereignty.
The session included representatives from 15 member states, including Ethiopia, Nigeria, and South Africa, alongside neighbouring countries such as Kenya and Djibouti. Officials from the United Nations, the Arab League, and East African regional bloc, Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) also attended.
Salem reaffirmed the Sudanese government’s commitment to the Jeddah Declaration, signed in May 2023, to end the war. He called for increased coordination with the council to facilitate humanitarian aid and launch a Sudanese-owned political process.
