Alitalia makes first flight to Benghazi since 2011

Benghazi, Libya (PANA) - Benina international airport in Libya's eastern city of Benghazi has welcomed the first flight by Italian airline Alitalia from Rome, since 2011, marking the official launch of the new Benghazi-Rome route which represents one of the most significant advances in air transport between Libya and Europe.

The resumption of this route is part of a strategic plan overseen by the Libyan Fund for Development and Reconstruction, under the direct supervision of its director, Belgacem Khalifa Haftar, according to a press release from the Fund on Tuesday.

It said the occasion marks a qualitative change aimed at revitalising the country's infrastructure and strengthening the investment climate.

Mr Haftar explained said the flight is the fruit of a series of meetings he has held with several Italian officials and representatives of major companies.

He added that the resumption of this route as an important gateway for the return of international companies and a direct contribution to supporting overall development efforts and promoting various sectors in Libya.

Onboard the inaugural flight was the Italian ambassador, the president of the Italian Chamber of Commerce and a number of Italian officials, in addition to more than 100 representatives of Italian companies who will take part in the Libyan-Italian Forum for Development and Reconstruction, to be held in Benghazi with the broad participation of businessmen and investors.
