Turkish Airlines resumes flights to Libya after 10 years

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - Turkish Airlines has resumed flights to Libya, making its first flight to Misrata International Airport, 220 km east of Tripoli, after ten years.

Transport Minister Mohamed Al-Shahoubi welcomed the first Turkish Airlines flight to Misrata International Airport on Tuesday, according to a statement published on the official Hakomitna platform.

The resumption of flights follows discussions with the Tripoli-based Government regarding the resumption of air services and the strengthening of air links between Libya and Turkey.

The statement said that this will help facilitate passenger traffic and support economic and tourist activity between the two countries.

Turkish Airlines will fly to Libya three times a week.

The Misrata City Council said the launch of Turkish Airlines flights tothe city is an important step in connecting Misrata to international destinations and boosting economic activity and services in the city and the central region.

Most airlines stopped flying to Libya in 2014, due to the deterioration of security, following clashes between armed groups in Tripoli, during which the international airport was partially set on fire.

But since the Government of National Unity government took office in Tripoli in 2021, Libya has entered a phase of normalisation that has allowed the return of embassies and international diplomatic missions, as well as the resumption of certain air links with Tunisia, Egypt, Malta, Italy and Jordan.
