CAR: one in three people in acute food insecurity
Bangui, CAR (PANA) - Around 2.2 million people in the Central African Republic (CAR) – or one in three – are currently facing “high levels of acute food insecurity”, United Nations humanitarian agencies said on Wednesday.
Of these, nearly 1.7 million (27% of the population) are classified as in Crisis (IPC Phase 3) and more than 480,000 people (7% of the population) are in Emergency Food Insecurity (IPC Phase 4).
According to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) survey for the period April to August 2025, the population in IPC Phase 3 (Crisis) has seen a slight reduction of about 76,000 people compared to the same period last year.
At the same time, the population in IPC Phase 4 (Emergency) increased slightly from 430,000 to 480,000 people.
Despite a slight improvement in the food security of the population, 80 out of 85 areas analysed are classified as crisis (IPC Phase 3). This demonstrates that the food situation remains worrying due to irregular rainfall, insecurity during the growing season, poor access to seeds, crop infestations and the upward trend in the prices of certain basic foodstuffs.
The report also highlights the effects of conflicts in Sudan and South Sudan, which are forcing significant numbers of people to flee their homes. According to UN humanitarian agencies, more than 440,000 people continue to live in displacement situations with limited access to livelihoods.
In addition to conflict and insecurity, the food situation remains worrying due to "low agricultural production and economic shocks". Agricultural production remains low due to insecurity and erratic rainfall in some areas.
