AU rejects formation of parallel government by Sudanese opposition

Port Sudan, Sudan (PANA) - The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) has issued a strongly worded statement in support of the de facto government in Port Sudan and condemned the announcement by the paramilitary Rapid support Forces (RSF) of a parallel government in areas it control in Darfur.

‘’(PSC) strongly condemned and rejected the announcement on Saturday 26 July 2025 of the establishment, in the Republic of Sudan, of a parallel government by the Sudan Founding Alliance (Tasis) led by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF),’’ it stressed in a statement following a meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The statement said the Council reaffirmed the AU's commitment to respect the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the Republic of Sudan and reject the creation of the “parallel government” in the country.

The Council has meanwhile urged all AU Member States and the international community to reject the fragmentation of Sudan and not recognise the “parallel government”, which has serious consequences on the peace efforts and the existential future of the country.

It urged all Member States and the international community to refrain from providing support or assistance of any nature to any armed or political group of the so called “parallel government” in the Republic of Sudan.

The statement said the Council stressed that the African Union only recognises the Sudanese Transitional Sovereignty Council and the recently formed civilian transitional government, until consensual arrangements are reached that meet the aspirations of the people towards smoothly returning to constitutional order.

The AU PSC reaffirmed the AU solidarity and unwavering commitment to continue supporting the people of Sudan in their aspirations to restore lasting peace, security, stability and prosperity in their country for the benefit of all Sudanese.

It further reiterated its call for the Parties to the Sudanese war, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and RSF, to “establish an immediate, permanent and unconditional ceasefire and to return to negotiations followed by an inclusive national dialogue and political transition” It also emphasised that there is no viable and sustainable military solution to the current conflict.

The statement said the Council unequivocally condemned all forms of external interference, which is fuelling the Sudanese conflict, in flagrant violation of all relevant PSC Communiques and UN Security Council Resolutions.
