ECOWAS meeting discusses financing fight against terrorism

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) - Experts from the Ministries of Finance and Defence of member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Wednesday began a meeting in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, on financing of the fight against terrorism.

According to a statement from ECOWAS, the meeting, which ends on Friday, will mainly focus on the review of a report on sustainable financing modalities for the ECOWAS Standby Force, created to fight terrorism and face unconstitutional changes of government in the region.

The ECOWAS Standby Force represents a "bold and necessary measure" to guarantee collective security, said ECOWAS, which said it is firmly committed to its founding ideals and to the principle that regional peace and stability are shared responsibilities, which require reliable and sustainable financing.

The reviewed study presents various funding options, including proposed adjustments to the community levy mechanism and settlement of outstanding contributions.
