Abuja, Nigeria (PANA) - The Authority of Heads of State of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Sunday unanimously endorsed Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama as the sole candidate of the African Union (AU) Chair when the rotating chairmanship reaches West Africa in 2027.
The decision follows the ECOWAS Council of Ministers’ unanimous recommendation of President Mahama as the sole candidate from the region.
Ghana's Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said In a post on social media that President Mahama conveyed his deepest appreciation to his peers, and have the assurance that he will meet the legitimate high expectations of the continent.
The recommendation, made during the Council’s ninety-fifth ordinary session in Abuja, was forwarded to the Authority of Heads of State and Government for formal adoption on Sunday.
A statement by ECOWAS on Friday said the Council of Ministers indicated that their recommendation followed "a request of the Government of Ghana for the support of member states for the candidacy of the Republic of Ghana to the chairmanship of the African Union in 2027”.
The rotating AU Chairmanship is for a year and the final decision rests with the AU Assembly, which elects the Chairperson through a secret ballot requiring a two-thirds majority.
