IGAD 'closely engaged' in dialogue between Ethiopian gov't and Oromo Liberation Army
Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - The East African regional bloc, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), has commented on the current peace talks between the government of Ethiopia and the Oromo Liberation Front and the challenges they are currently facing in their negotiations.
In a statement it issued on Wednesday, IGAD Executive Secretary Dr Workneh Gebeyehu said he acknowledged the vital role of dialogue and negotiation in addressing grievances and resolving conflicts, essential for achieving enduring peace in the region.
He said IGAD had been closely engaged in the ongoing dialogue between the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA).
“Leveraging upon IGAD’s experience in mediating similar situations, the Executive Secretary understands that in any negotiation process, there are inevitable periods of challenge and complexity.”
Dr. Workneh commended both negotiating teams for engaging in peaceful dialogue and expressed his gratitude to the IGAD technical team and the observers, notably the representatives of the US and Norway, for their support at the talks.
He also extended his appreciation to the Government of the Republic of Tanzania for hosting the talks.
“The Executive Secretary appeals to all involved parties to uphold their commitment to the peace process in the best interest of the people of Ethiopia,” the statment said.
Dr. Workneh expressed optimism that the two sides would initiate a new round of talks to address and resolve the remaining issues.
The statement said that IGAD would continue to remain seized of the situation and stood ready to provide unwavering support to both sides in their pursuit of a peaceful resolution to the situation.
