IGAD calls for swift response to Ebola outbreak in Uganda

Djibouti, (Djibouti) - The Ebola outbreak in Uganda requires urgent steps to combat, the Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr Workneh Gebeyehu, said on Tuesday.

The IGAD official said the organisation is following the Ebola outbreak in Uganda, which has been detected in three districts, with a lot of concern. There have been 18 confirmed and 18 probable cases of Ebola in Uganda since the first case was announced last Monday.

He said the outbreak is "a grave threat to public health and requires an effective response".

Dr Workneh further called for "a coordinated response" from governments, regional and international organisations, the private sector, and civil society organisations for a swift response by providing the requisite capacity, funding, and ensuring that there is awareness raising to dispel misinformation.

The Executive Secretary appealed to donors and other partners of IGAD to urgently support the Government of Uganda and "the courageous efforts of the first responders who are dealing with the situation".

He said the sub-regional group stands ready to work with the Government of Uganda and other stakeholders to develop a response plan.
