World Bank releases US$90 million to support women's empowerment in Benin

Cotonou, Benin (PANA) - The World Bank is to release US$90 million for Benin to assist the government to implement a regional project on Sahel Women’s Empowerment and Demographic Dividend (SWEDD), according to financial sources.

This additional funding for the SWEDD will improve human development in order to benefit from a demographic dividend in the longer term.

It aims to support the demand for services related to reproductive, maternal, infant, child and adolescent health and nutrition. There will also be investment in the continuing education of girls aged from 10 to 19 years old, while increasing their basic knowledge and their economic opportunities.

The funding will also be used to build capacity and increase the number of skilled care personnel and the availability of essential products, including contraceptives, in the most isolated areas.

It also aims to improve the capacity of demographic and socio-economic analysis, in order to support decision-making and to optimise the production and the sharing of information at the regional level by focusing on coordination and means reinforced.

It is aligned with the government's action programme, designed to stimulate the country's development through the strengthening of human capital. It is also part of the World Bank Group's partnership with Benin for the period 2018-2023, which aims to provide more economic leverage for women by integrating activities in their favour in all its operations.

Benin is the seventh country participating in the SWEDD regional project, along with Burkina Faso, Côte d'ivoire, Mauritania, Mali, Niger and Chad.
