Workshop on female genital mutilation ends in Mali

Bamako, Mali (PANA) - A workshop on female genital mutilation (FGM), aimed at building the capacity of officials and state institutions of the Malian National Programme to Combat Excision (PNLE), ended on Saturday in Yélimané, about 100 km from Kayes in western Mali.

About 50 representatives of the technical services of the State, civil society, community leaders, representatives of the Association for the Advancement and Development of Women (APDF) and the Coordination of Women's Associations and Organizations (CAFO) took part in the workshop.

It was organized under the theme: "Contributing to the promotion of renunciation of FGM in the Kayes region", and funded by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development (AECID).

The project coordinator, Mariam Doumbia, said that the rate of female genital mutilation in the Kayes region is 95% compared to 91% at the national level, specifying that efforts are ongoing to promote the renunciation of excision and all gender-based violence.

Female genital mutilation is popularly practised in the Yélimané area of Mali.
