Widow of South African photographer commemorates anniversary of his death

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – Almost 10 years have passed since South African photographer Anton Hammerl was shot dead by troops loyal to Muammar Gaddafi outside of Brega while covering the Libyan Civil War on 5 April 2011.

His remains have never been located and there has been no investigation into the circumstances of his death.

His widow, Penny Sukhraj-Hammerl has renewed her fight for justice. She has secured the services of a legal team from Doughty Street Chambers and will host a webinar on 1 April to chart the way forward.

They will be joined by Rebecca Vincent, a Reporters Without Borders director and James Foley, who was an eyewitness to his killing. Baroness Helena Kennedy, Chair of the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute will chair the event.

Hammerl was one of five journalists killed during the civil war.

On 28 April, 2011 the United Nations dispatched a three-man task force to Libya to investigate allegations that forces loyal to Gaddafi had committed human rights violations, including the detention of foreign journalists.
