Uganda's Ebola outbreak now in three districts, says health ministry

Kampala, Uganda (PANA) - The Ugandan Ministry of Health says the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in the country is now in three districts after the first case was announced in Mubende district where a 24-year-old man was said to be the first victim on 20 September.

The authorities said the EVD had spread to two neighbouring districts -- Kyegegwa where there are three cases and Kassenda where there is one case, the New Vision newspaper reported on Monday.

The ministry said the cumulative figures of Ebola have reached 34, with 16 being confirmed and 18 being probable cases.

The newspaper quoted the Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, as saying, "No confirmed cases in Kampala as yet."

On Friday the Ministry of Health said that the number of probable deaths stood at 11 while investigations were ongoing to confirm the cause of death of seven other people. The total number of deaths has not yet been disclosed.

The patients contracted the Sudan ebolavirus – one of the six species of the Ebolavirus genus, the World Health Organisation (WHO) Africa Regional Office said in a statement last week.

The ministry said dozens of contacts had been listed.

In an accelerated effort to scale up response to the Ebola disease outbreak in Uganda, WHO said it was delivering medical supplies, providing logistics and deploying staff to support the national authorities in halting the spread of the virus.
