U.S. wants to help Tunisia train a new generation of security forces

Tunis, Tunisia (PANA) - The U.S. Ambassador to Tunisia, Donald Blome, said his country is committed to helping Tunisia train a new generation of security auxiliaries, support ongoing reform efforts to strengthen criminal justice institutions that are more transparent, responsive, and rigorous against impunity.

The American diplomat, speaking on Thursday during the break in the foundation stone of the police academy in the town of Enefidha (100 km south of Tunis), said the academy, which is estimated to cost US$18 million, is part of a series of projects to reform security.

He referred to the partnership between the two countries in the fight against terrorism and ensure border security, noting that U.S. support to Tunisia since 2015 has reached more than US$ 200 million earmarked for equipment, service improvements, and training of police and gendarmerie teams.

The diplomat added that his country supports Tunisia to strengthen the partnership between law enforcement authorities and local associations to deal with all forms of violence, especially those targeting the most precarious categories.
