US nun abducted in north-central Burkina Faso

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) - An 83-year-old American nun was abducted on Monday night by unidentified gunmen in the parish of Yalgo, in the diocese of Kaya, about 100 km north of Ouagadougou, in the Centre-North region of Burkina Faso, an official statement said on Tuesday.

The unidentified armed men kidnapped Sister Suellen Tennyson, of the Congregation of Marianite Sisters of the Holy Cross, Bishop Théophile Naré of Kaya announced in the statement.

Sister Tennyson, who has been in Yalgo since October 2014, was taken to an unknown destination by her abductors, who also vandalised rooms and the community's vehicle, which they had tried to take away, the statement said.

"While waiting for the search for her to be successful, we remain in communion of prayer for the release of Sister Suellen Tennyson," Bishop Naré said. "We also pray for her Sisters, for her congregation, as well as for the pastoral agents and the faithful of the parish of Yalgo."

The security situation in Burkina Faso has been marked since 2015 by terrorist attacks and kidnappings.
