US envoy urges Sudanese authorities to adhere to agreed transitional order

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - US Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa Jeffrey Feltman has underscored the importance of the Sudanese Cabinet and the Sovereign Council adhering to the transitional order as established in the 2019 Constitutional Declaration and the 2020 Juba Peace Agreement.

A statement by the US Department of State said he made the point when he spoke separately to Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and to Sovereign Council Chair Abdelfattah al-Burhan this week.

"The Special Envoy reiterated that all the components of the transition, including the members of the Sovereign Council, the Cabinet, and the Forces of Freedom and Change, should avoid brinkmanship and mutual recrimination, and instead work together to resolve any areas of contention through dialogue without preconditions," the statement said.

PANA has reported that two years after toppling President Omar Bashir, Sudanese military and civilian wings in government, are still unable to blend with each other within a national interim government that has a mandate to lead the country to a free and fair election and full-fledged civilian democracy.

According to PANA analysis, a tense political atmosphere reigns in the Sudan, as numerous feuds are eclipsing the vision about what is hoped would lead the country to general elections in 2023.

On the one hand the two main sides to the hybrid government that brought together the army and the political parties in the Sovereign Transitional Council, or the collective presidency, have been at loggerhead since the foiled coup attempt on 21 September.

The civilians overtly accused military elements of nurturing the enterprise and the military on the other hand are putting it bluntly that they are not happy with the way the cabinet is running the government and sidelining some elements the army considers important within the political life of the country.

The civilian ministers within the cabinet have started openly and aggressively attacking senior army members of the Council, forcing the second strongest military man in the Council, Lt. Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, to declare that he would not sit at the same table with people who debase them as military, until they rendered an open apology.

On the other hand the political parties that formed the cabinet are now witnessing a serious split, though they belittle it as trivial.
