US condemns Sudan's failed coup attempt

Washington, DC, US (PANA) - The United States has condemned Tuesday's failed attempt by rogue military and civilian actors to seize power from Sudan’s Civilian Led Transitional Government (CLTG).

A press release by Ned Price, Spokesperson of the US Department of State said his country continues to support the CLTG in its pursuit of a democratic transition for Sudan.

"We urge the CLTG to hold all those involved accountable through a fair legal process," it said.

It added that anti-democratic actions such as those of Tuesday in Khartoum undermine the call of the Sudanese people for freedom and justice and place international support for Sudan, including the bilateral relationship with the United States, at risk.

"We condemn any external interference that seeks to sow disinformation and undermine the will of Sudan’s people."

The press release said along with a wide range of other international actors, the United States is mobilising substantial assistance to help Sudan achieve the country’s economic and security goals.

It said the US will advance this support as Sudan makes continued progress in its ongoing transition, including the establishment of a legislative assembly, reform of the security sector under civilian leadership, and justice and accountability for past human rights abuses.

The crisis-plagued government in Sudan on Tuesday said it thwarted a coup d’état in the early hours of the day and placed the planners in custody for interrogation.

Two statements -- one from Amy General Command and another from the Council of Ministers -- said the Armed Forces aborted the coup attempt at dawn.

Brigadier General Al-Taher Abu Haja, media adviser to the Commander-in-Chief of the Sudan Armed Forces, was quoted by the Sudan News Agency (SUNA) as saying that the situation was fully under control in Khartoum.

The current government, a hybrid of civilian and army elements, took power after a popular revolt ended 30 years of military dictatorship by President Omar Bashir in 2019.
