US carries out airstrikes against ISIS in Somalia

Washington, DC, US (PANA) - The U.S. on Saturday carried out airstrikes against ISIS in Somalia, the U.S. Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth said in a statement.

He said the U.S. Africa Command carried out the strikes at the direction of President Donald Trump and in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia.

He said the U.S. Africa Command was authorised to conduct “coordinated airstrikes today targeting ISIS-Somalia operatives in the Golis mountains”.

The statement said the initial assessment is that “multiple operatives were killed in the airstrikes and no civilians were harmed”.

The US said this action further degrades ISIS's ability to plot and conduct terrorist attacks threatening U.S. citizens, its partners, and innocent civilians.

It also sends “a clear signal” that the United States always stands ready to find and eliminate terrorists who “threaten the United States and our allies, even as we conduct robust border-protection and many other operations under President Trump's leadership”.

The statement by the U.S. did not give further details but media reports quoting the government of Somalia’s semiautonomous Puntland region say the airstrikes killed “key figures” of ISIS.
