US 'actively engaged' in efforts to bring peace to Sudan

Port Sudan, Sudan (PANA) - The White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, says the US administration is actively engaged in efforts to bring about a peaceful resolution to the terrible conflict in Sudan, but conceded that the situation on the ground is complicated.

In a briefing, the Press Secretary, responding to questions about the action President Donald Trump is expected to take on the conflict in the Sudan, she said the US administration remains “committed to working with our international partners including the quartet members -- Saudi Arabia, Egypt and UAE – and others to negotiate a peace process that addresses the immediate humanitarian crisis as well as the longer political challenges”.

She said she had spoken with Secretary of State Marco Rubio who assured her that the “Administration is very much engaged” with the process of peace efforts in Sudan.

“We want to see this conflict come to a peaceful end just as we have with so many others. But the reality is very complicated on the ground right now,” Leavitt told journalists at the White House on Wednesday.

The statement comes a day after an emergency meeting of the Sudanese National Security and Defence Council on Tuesday that welcomed American “efforts” and commended the US Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs, Massad Boulos. It welcomed any efforts aimed at putting an end to the suffering of the Sudanese people.

The Minister of Defence, Lieutenant General Hassan Daoud Kabroun, stated in a press statement that the meeting discussed the security situation in the country.

The Minister explained that the Council discussed the developments in El Fasher “and the grave and unprecedented violations perpetrated by the (Muhammad Hamdan) Dagalo terrorist militia (Rapid Support Forces) against civilians", saying these crimes have been condemned by the international community.

Mr. Kabroun also pointed to the lack of action by the international community in following up the implementation of resolutions of the world bodies that prohibit the provision of weapons to the Darfur region and also lifting the siege of El Fasher.

The Minister stated that the Council also discussed the humanitarian situation in the country, security threats, and preparations for current and future operations.

He added that the Council welcomed sincere efforts calling for an end to the suffering of the Sudanese people.

The minister said the Council has decided to “mobilise the Sudanese people to support their armed forces to eliminate the rebel militia within the framework of general mobilisation and the state's efforts to end this rebellion”.

He said a committee was formed and tasked with preparing and presenting the Sudanese government's vision on facilitating the delivery of humanitarian assistance, supporting humanitarian action, and restoring security and peace throughout Sudan.
