UNFPA coordinates implementation of 2020 strategy to combat gender-based violence in Libya

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - Thirty-five representatives of the Ministries of Social Affairs, Education, Health and Justice of the Libyan Government of National Accord in Tripoli and the Interim Government in Beidha in the east and representatives of local and international NGOs are coordinating with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for the implementation of a "2020 Strategy" to combat gender-based violence in Libya.

The UNFPA Representative Berangere Boell-Yousfi said in a statement on Wednesday that the Fund continues to invest heavily in "strengthening the response to gender-based violence in Libya" and called on "civil society organizations and Libyan authorities to continue to help the Fund achieve its objectives".

She also called for greater funding from "international partners and the Libyan government to prevent cases of violence", stressing the need for coordination to create an institutional environment providing services to prevent violence and protect women and men.

The aim of the workshop is to review the strategy on combating gender-based violence for 2020, which is being developed, in consultation with key stakeholders and interlocutors on the issue, the statement added.

"It is also an opportunity to hold consultations on preparedness and emergency planning for gender-based violence for next year," the statement said, adding that "this workshop comes at a time when we are all developing the humanitarian response plan for 2020".

It is crucial to take into account and coordinate responses to gender-based violence in emergencies.

The Fund stressed that "it is concerned that only 10 percent of funding needs for 2019 are covered", stressing that additional support is needed in 2020.

The statement stressed the "need for multi-year planning after 2020 in the areas of data development and institutionalization of response and prevention of gender-based violence", calling on the various ministries to invest in building their technical capacity to achieve the Fund's objectives.
