UN women to hold a conference on gender-responsive budgeting

Cotonou, Benin (PANA) - UN women and the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) are organising next Saturday in Marrakesh, Morocco, a conference on best practices and issues in Gender-Responsive Budgeting (BSG) in Africa, PANA learned from the UN institution.

The meeting, which will run alongside the 52nd session of the Conference of African Ministers of Finance, planning and economic development, will be an opportunity to analyse the experiences of the African approach for the purposes to understand the results, successes, challenges and opportunities.

The meeting will also help them to explore the opportunities for the adoption of BSG as an innovative model of public funding for the achievement of development priorities in Africa.

This meeting will lead to the launch of an African exchange platform for the production of knowledge, decision-support tools and innovation in BSG and the fight against inequalities in African.

The GBSG is a performance-oriented budget approach that respects the financial principles of efficiency, effectiveness and fairness.

It aims to combat gender inequality and discrimination against women through budget programmes accompanied by performance indicators and with traceable annual budgets.

Because it allows  a reduction of inequalities through the efficient management of public finances, the BSG is a means of sustaining the continent's strong economic growth and increasing its impact on human development.

More than 15 member countries of the African Union have adopted, for almost 20 years, different models of the BSG principles.

The 52nd Conference of African Ministers of finance, planning and economic development (CoM),  to be held from 20 to 26 March in Marrakesh, will focus on the theme: "Fiscal policy, trade and the private sector in the digital era: a strategy for Africa."

This is in recognition of the need to strengthen the mobilization of national resources on the continent and to increase competitiveness by taking advantage of the power of digital technology.
