UN concerned with attempts to sap integrity of Libyan security institutions

Tripoli, Libya (PANA)  - The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Monday said it was following with deep concern the attempts aiming to sap the integrity of the Libyan institutions, including the Interior ministry, following violations committed by certain militias.

In a tweet, the UNSMIL reaffirmed its support for the “full reform of the security sector” in Libya, calling for the application of laws.

The reaction of the UN mission comes following criticisms by the Libyan minister of the interior of the government of national accord, Fathi Bachagha, at a news conference Sunday, of the militias accused of infiltrating the intelligent services and its will to fight against corruption within the ministry.

Bachagha said that the Interior ministry "wants to dismantle the criminality, organised crimes and militias who attack the police services and who exploit the ongoing situation in the capital by attacking the government institutions".

He also added that "the intelligent service was infiltrated by a militia" he did not name, adding "that militia has begun plotting against the police of the office of the general prosecution".

The Interior minister reaffirmed that "any force that attacks the units of the ministry and abducts the citizens is considered as militia".

In another development, Bachagha said Monday that "the civilian government which guarantees security, prosperity and stability will not be established in the presence of extremism and terrorism or dictatorship and tyranny and will not be established too by the pretentions of revolutionaries relying on militias".

In a tweet, Bachagha underlined that "the revolutionaries are those supporting the government and do not attack its institutions and protect the country and its citizens".

On Sunday, Bachgha said that the ministry would try hard “to integrate the members respectful of the laws", the armed formations in security institutions, adding that “Libya will not be the contrary of what is done in the world in terms of institution".

He also reaffirmed the responsibility of the security services of the Interior ministry to carry on the protection of public institutions and defend the means of subsistence of its citizens and to carry on the cooperation in terms of security with the United States to organize the security and police services.
