UN and Libyan Interior Ministry agree to resume security reform programme

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Libya, Stephanie Williams, and the Minister of Interior of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fathi Bachagha, are to resume their activities in the security sector reform (SSR) and demobilization, reintegration and disarmament (DRD) support programmes and projects, a statement issued Sunday evening by the United Nations Mission of Support in Libya (UNSMIL) has indicated.

Security sector reform and demobilization, reintegration and disarmament efforts in Libya were impacted by the outbreak of hostilities in April 2019, the statement said, adding that an UNSMIL delegation composed of security reform experts and a delegation from the Libyan Ministry of Interior, including the directors of the finance department, the general training department and the Interpol office, stressed the link between security and economic reforms.

The delegations agreed, at a virtual meeting held on Saturday 11 July 2020, to resume the activities of support programmes and projects, the statement said.

Acting UN Representative, Stephanie Williams, for her part, said: "The Mission stands ready to provide all necessary support to the Libyan authorities and stressed the importance of coordinating efforts at national and international levels in order to achieve successful SSR and DRD in Libya".
