UN Mission in Libya condemns bombing of Tripoli military academy

Tripoli Libya (PANA) - The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has condemned  the bombing of the military academy in Tripoli, in which 30 people were killed and 33 others injured.

"The escalation of military acts will only further complicate the situation in Libya and threaten the opportunities for the resumption of the political process," UNSMIL said in a statement.

"The escalation of indiscriminate bombing, which targets civilians and civilian infrastructure and services, such as hospitals and schools, is likely to be elevated to war crimes," the Mission warned, adding that perpetrators of such bombing will sooner or later be punished.

UNSMIL expressed "its sincere condolences" to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded.

Libya, plunged into chaos and anarchy since the fall of Col. Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011. It now faces violent clashes that began on 4 April 2019 when Marshal Haftar's forces launched a military campaign to take control of Tripoli, the seat of the Government of National Accord led by Fayez Sarraj, and the entire western region of the country.

The Security Council is holding a closed-door meeting on Libya on Monday at the request of Moscow, it was reported.

Moscow's request related to Germany's decision to hold an international conference on Libya at the end of January.

But diplomatic sources have indicated that the Security Council meeting will also discuss the military agreement signed between Ankara and Tripoli on sending military troops to support the forces of the Government of National Accord.

According to the same sources, it is very likely that one of the members of the Security Council will raise the issue of the presence of Russian mercenaries in Libya in support of Haftar's forces.
