UN Chief calls on all Sudanese to show restraint
New-York, United States (PANA) - The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, has called on the Sudanese to exercise maximum restraint and avoid violence, reiterating the United Nations' availability to support all Sudanese efforts to find a peaceful solution to the current crisis.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the UN information centre, the UN Secretary-General called for full respect for human rights, including freedom of grouping and expression, as well as the release of arrested demonstrators.
He called on the Sudanese government to create a climate that could help to find a solution to the current situation and establish an inclusive dialogue.
The popular movement in Sudan has been on for almost four months and has been gathering, since Saturday, 6 April, in front of the Sudanese army headquarters.
The protesters demanded the departure of President Omar El-Bashir and his regime.
The protests were triggered by the government's decision on 19 December 2018 to triple the price of bread in a country plagued by a profound economic crisis since the independence of South Sudan in 2011.
The rallies quickly turned into a protest against the 75-year-old President Bashir, in power since 1989, following a coup.
