Two killed, several wounded in rocket attack on Tripoli neighbourhood

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - Two persons were killed and several others were wounded in a rocket attack that targeted the Zenata neighbourhood in Tripoli, illustrating the continued military escalation despite the declaration of a truce by the Libyan National Army led by Marshal Khalifa Haftar.

The spokesman for the health ministry of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Amin Al-Hachemi, announced that "two people have been killed and others wounded as a result of the rocket fire that hit the Zenata region near the Natifa mosque in the capital, Tripoli".

Al-Hachemi added in a statement that "rescue and emergency services are collecting shredded body parts to confirm the number of dead."

He named the dead as "Youssef Bizan and Aguila Boukhriss", noting that "among the injured was a woman who was pulled from the rubble and is in a serious condition".

The military operation Volcano of Wrath under the GNA government confirmed that the Zenata region was hit by Grad rockets, explaining that initial reports indicated a number of dead and wounded.

The same source announced that the government air force early Friday targeted a tanker truck in the Al-Gharia Al-Charghia area and two armed cars in Wadi de Moursit, in the southwest.

The military operation said that the two cars were on their way to supply Haftar's forces.

The spokesman for the government forces, Col. Mohamed Ganounou, announced that five raids targeted the positions of the Haftar forces at Al-Wattia airbase in the southwest.

This escalation comes in the wake of the call by the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to the Libyan warring parties for a cessation of military operations and a humanitarian truce during Ramadan as a prelude to the resumption of talks in the framework of the 5+5 Joint Military Committee to reach a permanent ceasefire.

The Libyan National Army led by Khalifa Haftar announced a cessation of military operations on its side during the month of Ramadan.

In response, the Presidential Council of the GNA demanded "international mechanisms and guarantees" within the framework of the UN-supervised 5+5 Military Committee.
