Two extremists arrested by Tunisian security forces

Tunis, Tunisia (PANA) - Tunisian security units in Meknine, 175 km south of Tunis, on Saturday arrested a Takfiri element, who was under judicial investigation for "joining an alleged terrorist organization," a Tunisian security source said, indicating that the arrested person had been sentenced to one year in prison.

The Manouba search and inspection team in Tunis on Friday also arrested another Takfiri who was under investigation for "membership of a suspected terrorist organization," according to a Tunisian Interior Ministry statement issued on Saturday.

In the same vein, the regional counter-terrorism service in Kasserine (central-western Tunisia) discovered late Friday a camp for suspected terrorists in the mountain ranges near the border with Algeria.

According to the Tunisian security source, the camp was discovered during extensive patrol operations a few days after the discovery of two other camps for suspected terrorists where explosives, medicines, water filtration products and digging tools were found.

Extremist groups have been entrenched since 2012 in the mountain ranges between Tunisia and Algeria, from where they carry out attacks against elements of the army, security and public structures.

Tunisia and Algeria are coordinating security and intelligence plans to combat these groups, which have helped to reduce the "terrorist" threat through preventive operations. The Tunisian authorities had recently announced that, since 2016, they had been able to eliminate 112 suspected terrorists, both in the mountain ranges and inside the country, while seizing arms and ammunition.
