Tunisian associations, NGOs back popular revolt in US

Tunis, Tunisia (PANA) - More than 30 Tunisian associations and NGOs Friday expressed their full solidarity with the millions of Americans who took to the streets about a week ago in different regions of the United-States against “the savage killing on 25 May in Minneapolis by a US police officer in the street of a US citizen, George Floyd”.

In a joint statement, the signatories denounced the decision taken by President Donald Trump, “known for his racist and hostile positions to the rights of the people to enjoy justice, equality and to emancipate themselves from the occupation of dictatorship – to oppose the legitimate protests of the American people by force and police repression”.

After denouncing the threats issued by President Trump to have the army intervene to end the protests, they called on the Tunisian people to offer their solidarity with the American people in their fight against racism by participating in the solidarity gathering to be held on Saturday, 6 June, at the municipal theater of Tunis.

Among the signatories of the statement are the Association for the Promotion of the right for difference, the Association of Tunisian women for research on development, Association no justice, no peace, and the Tunisian association of defence for civil liberties.

The others were the Tunisian association of fight against violence, the Tunisian association of democratic women, the Tunis center for press freedom, the Tunisian coalition for the abolition of death penalty, and the Committee for the respect of liberties and human rights in Tunisia.

The rest were the League of Tunisian free writers, the League of Tunisian voters, the Tunisian league for the defence of human rights, Tunisian initiative of support for popular protests, and the national trade-union of Tunisian journalists.
