Tunisian President Kaïs Saied decides to withdraw diplomatic passport of former President Moncef Marzouki

Tunis, Tunisia (PANA) - Tunisian President Kaïs Saïed announced on Wednesday he had decided to withdraw the diplomatic passport of any personality who had solicited foreign intervention in the country's internal affairs.

"Some people have gone abroad to harm Tunisia's interests," he said.

Saied was referring in particular to the former president, Moncef Marzouki, who said he was "proud" of having contributed to aborting the Francophonie Summit, during an intervention on Wednesday on the channel "France 24".

The meeting, which was to be held in November in Tunisia, was postponed to 2022 on the recommendation of the Council of Permanent Representatives of the International Organization of the Francophonie.

Two days earlier, Mr Marzouki had participated in a demonstration in Paris, during which he had urged French decision-makers "not to support a totalitarian system".

Speaking at the first Council of Ministers held following the formation of the new government on Monday, Saïed asked the Minister of Justice to open a judicial enquiry into these actions, which he described as "plotting against the internal and external security of the state" under Article 23 of the Code of Criminal Procedures.

At the same time, he reiterated his commitment to democracy and freedom, announcing the opening, in the near future, of a dialogue with the people and youth excluding "those who plot with foreigners".

The union of the diplomatic corps welcomed, in a statement issued Thursday, the decision announced by the President of the Republic to withdraw their diplomatic passports from all those who called for foreign interference in the internal affairs of the country.
