Tunisian, Greek FMs discuss Libyan crisis

Tunis, Tunisia (PANA) – The situation in Libya was the main discussion during a meeting on Monday in Tunis between the Tunisian minister of foreign affairs, Noureddine Erray, and his Greek counterpart, Nikos Dendias, says a communiqué issued by the Tunisian ministry of foreign affairs.

The two parties reaffirmed their support for peaceful and consensual Libyan-Libyan solution, said the communiqué which added that Tunisia and Greece are for international legality, the UN resolutions and reject all foreign interferences in Libya.

Speaking at a news conference, the Greek diplomat, who is on a working visit to Tunisia, said he agreed with his Tunisian counterpart that the solution to the Libyan crisis requires a Libyan leadership without foreign interference and military intervention, estimating that Tunisia can play a key role in the search for solutions to the Libyan crisis and constructive role in the region.

He reaffirmed the commitment of his country to continue working within the framework of the international law and in accordance with the decisions made at the Berlin Conference, saying that Turkey’s intervention in Libya is in contradiction with the solution adopted by the UN and aiming to cause the destabilization of the region.

He added that his meeting with his Tunisian counterpart was an opportunity to examine several international issues, including the relations between Tunisia and the European Union, expressing his country’s availability to help Tunisia face the economic and development challenges.

The Greek minister hailed the success of Tunisia to stop the spread of the new coronavirus (Covid-19), calling for the strengthening of the bilateral relations in the political and economic domains.

Responding, the Tunisian minister of foreign affairs indicated that the meeting focused on several issues of common international interest, on top of which is the situation in Libya, the relations between Tunisia and the European Union and the cooperation between countries of the Mediterranean Basin.

On the situation in Libya, Mr Erray reaffirmed the need to search for a peaceful consensual Libyan-Libyan solution and to reject all foreign interferences and military solutions, saying that Tunisia was willing to undertake contacts with parties who intervene in Libya and neighboring countries, including Algeria particularly, to find the better solutions.

During their meeting, the two parties examined the bilateral relations by insisting on the need to strengthen their relations on the economic and commercial levels, Mr. Erray said, estimating that the signing on Monday of a deal between the two countries on the maritime transport in eastern Mediterranean will encourage the trade and facilitate business people and exporters of the two countries to share goods.

The two parties pleaded for the holding this year of the 11th session of the joint Greek-Tunisian commission, the communiqué said, adding that the two ministers insisted on the need to better prepare for the holding of the 4th session of political consultations between the two parties.
