Tunisia welcomes signing of political agreement in Sudan

Tunis, Tunisia (PANA) – The Tunisian ministry of foreign affairs on Sunday expressed its "deep satisfaction" with the signing by Sudanese rivals of the Constitutional Declaration and political agreement that will lead to civilian rule.

Tunisia also welcomed the efforts made by the African Union and Ethiopian envoys and congratulated the Sudanese people for "the great achievement", which is an important step toward stability, strengthening of security and the foundations for peace and development.

The Constitutional Declaration and political agreement was signed by the Forces for Freedom and Change and the Transitional Military Council.

The Tunisian foreign ministry in a statement urged the international community to support Sudan in this transitional period and to back its efforts to establish a civilian, democratic and fair state that works for the aspirations of its people.

The two parties on 4 August reached a pre-deal on the constitutional declaration, thanks to an African Union-backed mediation at the end of which the signatories agreed on a 39-month transitional period during which they will share power before elections.
