Tunisia to participate in the UN Mission in CAR

Tunis, Tunisia (PANA) - Tunisia's participation in the UN Mission in the Central African Republic was the focus of a meeting on Tuesday between the Speaker of Parliament, Rached Ghannouchi, and Defence Minister Brahim Bartagi.

According to an official statement, the Speaker has given his approval to such a participation according the provisions of the Constitution.

Since 1960, only four years after the country's independence, the Tunisian armed forces have participated in 17 peacekeeping operations around the world under the aegis of the UN.

Tunisian peacekeepers have been in Congo, Somalia, Cambodia, Côte d'Ivoire, Chad and Burundi, where their contributions have earned them high praise and honours from the United Nations, while paying a heavy price.

In January 2010, Tunisian diplomat Hédi Annabi, then Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), died in Port-au-Prince following an earthquake that struck the Haitian capital.
