Tunisia: President Kais Saied extends state of emergency from 30 May

Tunis, Tunisia (PANA) - The Tunisian president, Kais Saied, Friday extended by six months the state of emergency all over the national territory with effect from 30 May.

Former Tunisian President Béji Caïd Essebsi established the state of emergency in the country following the deadly ’terrorist’ attack that targeted in 2015 the Bardo Museum in Tunis, a tourist seaside resort in Sousse, 140 km south of the capital, and a bus of the presidential guard at the center of Tunis.

Since then, the state of emergency has been regularly extended.

The Tunisian minister of the Interior, Hichem Mechichi, had on 14 May said that the security situation in the country was marked by relative stability despite the challenges facing Tunisia, indicating that "this relative stability is due to the continued terrorist threats".

The minister had said that the alleged terrorist organisations had shared confidential slogans among their members, encouraging them to perpetrate attacks by exploiting the sensitive circumstances which the country is going through.

The number of crimes committed through the Internet and linked to terrorist issues reached 108 cases during the first quarter of 2020, said the Tunisian minister of Interior, adding that 29 people involved in such issues were arrested.
