Tripoli asks Security Council to add Khalifa Haftar to list of UN sanctions committee

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - Libya's Presidential Council on Wednesday asked the UN Security Council to add the commander general of the Libyan National Army, Marshal Khalifa Haftar, to the list of the Sanctions Committee set up by Resolution 1970 of 2011.

The Foreign Ministry of the Libyan Government of National Accord has sent a request to the Security Council in which it states that Haftar "planned and executed his aggression against Tripoli and violated international law and human rights through the acts committed by his forces against innocent civilians, such as the attacks on the two districts of Ansar and Abu Salim at the beginning of his campaign".

The ministry added in its request another reason for the continuation of "daily air raids by Haftar's forces against very popular neighbourhoods", recalling that the criteria for inclusion in the sanctions list are Article 22 (A) of Resolution 1970 of 2011 and paragraph 4 (A) of Resolution 1974 of 2014.

It said that "Haftar's forces bombed international civilian airports such as Tripoli's Matiga and Misratah airports and attacked government services and structures under the tutelage of the internationally recognized Government of National Accord.

Airraids by Haftar's warplanes bombed a house in Tripoli's Ferjan district on Monday killing three girls from the same family, said Fayez Sarraj, head of the Government of National Accord.

The UN Mission in Libya also condemned the attack, saying in a statement that "the attack horribly resulted in the death of three innocent sisters, buried in the rubble of the house destroyed by the raid, and wounded a fourth daughter and her mother from the same family". It added that there were reports that the attack was carried out by a warplane of Haftar's national army.
