Top musicians confirmed for Mandela concert

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – International advocacy organisation, Global Citizen, on Monday confirmed that musical giants Beyonce and Jay-Z will headline the first Global Citizen Festival to be held in Africa in December.

The free event is scheduled for 2 December at Soweto’s Soccer City Stadium.

The event forms part of the Mandela 100 campaign which aims to honour world statesman Nelson Mandela who was born 100 years ago on 18 July.

It will be co-hosted by Oprah Winfrey, Naomi Campbell, Bob Geldof, Gayle King, Tyler Perry and Forest Whitaker.

Other artists, including D'banj, Ed Sheeran, Femi Kuti and Tiwa Savage will perform at the event.

Several world leaders will address the event, including Norway’s Prime Minister Erna Solberg and Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, who both serve as co-chairs of the UN Secretary General’s Advocacy Group for the Sustainable Development Goals.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will give the opening address.

The “Mandela 100” campaign aims to raise US$1 billion in new commitments for the world’s poorest people.
