Top UN official urges Ivorians to work together for peaceful presidential vote

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, has completed his pre-election mission in Côte d'Ivoire by urging Ivorians to work together to preserve unity and peace during the 31 October month's presidential election, a UN statement said.

The objective of the mission was to renew UN support for a peaceful, inclusive, transparent and credible presidential election, and to encourage stakeholders to work together for peace and stability, the statement sad.

UNOWAS said during his mission, Dr. Chambas met President Alassane Ouattara, the Prime Minister, as well as the Ministers in charge of Administration, Security and Civil Protection.

He also had working sessions with the Constitutional Council, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), the National Council for Human Rights (CNDH), presidential candidates, political parties, as well as with the President of the defunct Dialogue, Truth and Reconciliation Commission and civil society organisations.

Dr. Chambas also met with the informal group of development partners, as well as the UN Country Team.

While congratulating Ivorians for their efforts for peace, the Special Representative reiterated his call on all political actors to continue their commitment to the organisation of a peaceful and inclusive election, in respect of human rights, the statement said.

In this regard, he noted the provisional release of detainees on 23 September, and hoped that further steps to calm the situation would be taken as the electoral process continued.

Dr. Chambas called on all Ivorian political actors to reject the use of hate speech, violence and all forms of sectarianism, and to commit to a peaceful electoral process and a peaceful presidential election.

The statement said in a context of the COVID-19 pandemic, he stressed the importance of acting in synergy and consultation to overcome differences, preserve unity and peace, which are essential to the prosperity of Côte d'Ivoire.
