Third World Chinese Conference opens in Mauritius
Grand Bay, Mauritius (PANA) - The third edition of the World Chinese Conference, a three-day event organised by the Federation of Chinese Societies to promote cultural exchanges, cooperation and development among members of the Chinese Diaspora in the world, opened Thursday at the International Conference Centre, Grand Bay, northern Mauritius.
Some 300 delegates from China, Canada, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore South Africa, Swaziland, Namibia, Malawi, Ethiopia, Cote d'Ivoire, Ivory Botswana, La Réunion Island, Seychelles and Mauritius are participating in the event.
Mauritian Deputy Prime Minister Rashid Beebeejaun addressed the gathering Thursday, saying
Mauritians of Chinese descent constitute an economically-dynamic and culturally-vibrant component of the Mauritian society.
''The efforts which they have deployed in the country’s quest to move forward and in nation-building have to be acknowledged and praised,'' he said.
He said the Chinese culture forms an integral part of the country's national heritage and its pluralistic society that makes the pride of the Mauritian nation.
Beebeejaun emphasised China and Mauritius have long standing historical, political, economic and cultural ties spanning over several decades.
The theme of the Conference is: ''The role of the Chinese Diaspora in the shaping of the modern world.''
A business forum is also taking place on the sidelines of the conference, and participants will speak on the ''Chinese Distributions to Africa'' and ''Tourism and Investment round the Indian Ocean.''
