Tanzania education NGO wins African excellence award

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (PANA) - A Tanzania non-profit organisation, HAKIELIMU, which employs human-rights based approaches to education, emphasising quality of learning, has received worldwide recognition after emerging winner of the 2019 African Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) excellence award.

The organisation, which also emphasises governance and active citizen engagement in education, beat 389 other CSOs across 46 African countries in the awards event organised by the Rockefeller Foundation and Epic Africa Organization in Ghana.

HakiElimu Executive Director, Dr John Kallaghe, said in Dar es Salaam on Monday that the awards highlight the importance of organisational capacity in the quest to achieve programme impact and improve the well-being of African citizens.

Speaking at the ceremony to introduce the award, Country Coordinator of the Tanzania Education Network, Ochola Wayoga, said: “This award is dedicated to thousands of children who lack opportunities to get education. Continue to tell the truth... You may also think of expanding your strategy to reach other parts of Africa.”

The ceremony, which brought together education stakeholders and CSOs, was graced by the Deputy Minister of State in the President’s Office (Regional Administration and Local Governments Authority), Mwita Waitara, and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Dr Leonard Akwilapo.

The African CSO excellence awards reward organisations that demonstrate excellence across eight key elements of organisational capacity.

The elements include strategic ability and adaptability, leadership and governance, financial health and management, partnership and alliances and monitoring and evaluation.

HakiElimu is known for its rigorous researches aimed at improving Tanzania’s education system to make it more effective.
