Suspect in shooting of demonstrators in Tripoli arrested

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The Interior Ministry of the Government of National Accord (GNA) on Thursday announced the arrest of a suspect in the shooting of demonstrators who were protesting in the Martyrs Square in Tripoli against corruption and the deterioration of living conditions of the population.

According to the statement of the ministry, the suspect is being interrogated and will be referred to the prosecutor's office after the conclusion of the investigation, the results of which will be presented to the President of the Presidential Council.

"All those who have targeted civilians and threatened the lives of peaceful demonstrators will be prosecuted," said the Interior Ministry.

It called on demonstrators to respect the law and not to infringe on public and private property, and to assert their claims in a peaceful, civilised and democratic manner.

Demonstrations, mostly attended by young people, have been organised in recent days in Tripoli and other Libyan cities to denounce the deterioration of living conditions, mismanagement and endemic corruption in public institutions.
